Simple Skin Care for Men

An easy-to-follow routine for lifelong skin health

by Stacie Torres - September 26, 2018

Maybe you’re not the kind of man who particularly values a glowing complexion or soft skin that’s irresistible to touch. Regardless, skin can get exposed to some pretty harsh pollutants. Having a low-maintenance skin care routine can help combat those effects. A daily routine may seem daunting, but it doesn’t have to be.

Prevent dryness, eczema, skin rashes, acne and premature aging with a few simple steps. Put your best face forward with this ritual:

Exfoliate
Get into the habit of exfoliating two to three times a week to speed up skin renewal and give your complexion an added, fresh glow.

Right before you shave, splash warm water on your face to open clogged pores. Another tip? Use an exfoliating cleanser for maximum impact. Apply exfoliator to forehead, cheeks, chin and nose, and gently scrub to eliminate built-up dirt. This also reduces the probability of ingrown hairs and will give you a much smoother shave.

Cleanse
Consider looking for a facial cleanser specific to your skin type – it’s your best defense against challenging areas. A facial cleanser with limited fragrance – the less added chemicals, the better – minimizes irritation. Steer clear of using that bar of soap hanging around your bathroom, as the chemicals may be too harsh on skin and can result in dryness and irritation.

Moisturize
After clearing impurities, apply a moisturizer to add a firm layer of protection and block toxins from re-entering the skin’s surface. Moisturizers hydrate the skin to prevent dryness and cracking. If you’re prone to dry, flakey skin, consider using a moisturizer that feels like it’s got a bit more weight – this will sink in at night and moisturize beyond the surface. For those with oily skin, consider using an oil-free moisturizer to prevent adding too much moisture to the skin.

Retinol
You’re going to want to add a retinol to your skin care collection. Here’s why:

  • It’s a derivative of Vitamin A, which is proven to reverse wrinkles.
  • It’s also helpful in lightening hyperpigmentation and reducing acne scarring.

Use twice a week and watch your skin become more radiant.

Protect
Arguably the most important step in this routine: a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 40 or higher. Shielding the skin from sun exposure every morning provides long-lasting results. Fight off wrinkles, fine-lines and defy age. Consider keeping a small, on-the-go bottle for unexpected outside adventures to ensure maximum protection at all times.
